A long long journey. Breakfast at the hotel was as expected. Delicious. The Uber to the airport to pick up the car seamless. The lady on the desk was very funny so set a good feel for the day. We refilled water bottles as the heat was already building and went to find the car …. a big grey pathfinder. No satnav so we plugged in Mr Google and it worked fine.
To start with the landscape was pretty monotonous.
Gradually the scenery changed with more hills and mountains.
The rocks changed colour slowly going more red. The various strata were clear and mesas began to appear.
In need of a coffee stop we pulled off the Highway into a service area. Petrol , drinks, food, toys and bizarrely lots of dressing up clothes.
Our next stop was at the supermarket in St George. We picked up provisions for the next 2 days anticipating we would be out of town. A subway provided a quick lunch. The chap was a bit overwhelmed by 4 brits in one go. The journey went from Nevada through a corner of Arizona and into Utah with an hour clock change. The scenery got higher and higher as we travelled.
We called in at the visitors centre to sort out possible walking trails whilst we are here. Then we had another 20 miles through precipitous switchbacks to get to our mountain ranch.
We are in wooden cabins. Mark and I have a wooden rustic 4 poster bed but with a jacuzzi in the corner next to a gas fire! I am sitting on a swing seat on the porch at the moment with this view. Bison! Luckily there is a fence.
We plan to dine here tonight as we don’t fancy another 20 miles to the nearest alternative.
Think little house on the prairie and you won’t be far wrong.
